What is chair massage?
It is a massage performed on a specially designed padded massage chair, takes between 15 and 30 minutes and is designed to address the muscles of the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and back - the upper body areas that often cause problems for people who sit at a desk or use a computer keyboard.
What are the benefits?
Many, including reduction in muscle tension, stress reduction, lessening of pain, promotion of deeper and easier breathing, relief of tension-related headaches and effects of eye strain, improved ability to monitor stress signals and respond appropriately. The outcome of “relaxed alertness” leaves you feeling more energized and productive. A reduction in muscle tension also leads to improved blood circulation and an improved immune system.
Will it hurt?
It should not hurt, although there are often tender spots for those suffering severe or prolonged muscle tension. In the most severe of cases - where blood-flow has been restricted for an extended period of time - you may experience tenderness and some occasions of throbbing, as blood-flow reaches previously blocked muscles and tissues and nerve impulses.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
The massage is performed in your normal work attire (minus jacket and loosening of tie) and requires no oils or creams (unless requested on arms or hands).
Is the chair comfortable?
The chair is padded vinyl and is individually adjusted to suit each client. It supports you in a head-forward position, allowing you to completely rest your head and neck in a cradle, has a cushion for your arms, your chest and one for your knees.
Will I be able to work afterwards?
Sure! You should feel invigorated and alert, and your muscles will feel less tense. Some people may experience a brief period of sleepiness, followed by a new alertness. Drinking lots of pure water assists any waste products from your tissues to be released from your body.
What if I’m sick or injured – can I still come?
If you are sick or are recently recovering from an illness, your body is fighting to restore your immune system. Depending on where you are on the road to recovery, often a massage can be too much for your body to handle. It depends entirely on the individual.
